2019 | Solastalgia: a feeling of distress caused by environmental change. A visual narrative reflecting the escalating impact of human pollution on the environment. Part of the official selection in Norwich Film Festival 2019.
Solastalgia was my solo short film project graduating from Norwich University of the Arts. Wanting to explore my passion for landscapes and cinematography, the idea stemmed from noticing some personal illustration projects had revolved around a fascination with harsh manmade structures set against beautiful natural sunsets; a juxtaposition that ended up inspiring the visuals for the rest of the film.
I found the word solastalgia – coined by Glenn Albrecht - perfectly summarised my feelings of helplessness when faced with the increasing urgency of climate change and the scale of humanity’s impact on the environment. My hope was to capture these feelings in some way, focus the story on the whole planet itself.
